An Eagle Spoke
by Maurice R. Franks
An island once with rocky strands, with shores so cold and hard,
With castles more than other lands, its coastline thus did guard.
’Twas lush and green, this Emerald Isle, hearth fires warm and red,
And sons and daughters with a smile did share their daily bread.
So Patrick spoke of this fine place, said he, “My sons are blessed.
I’ll send them forth, the world to grace, to stand above the rest.”Next Rose of Lima spoke in turn, said she to Patrick clear,
“To reach my land your sons shall yearn, for we have beauty here.
Our people are as kind as yours, our fields almost as green.
Our many isles have lovely shores, and beaches warm and clean.
My daughters are more comely yet than all the queens of earth.
With clime so warm and moist and wet, in love we do give birth.”An Eagle spoke, and he did boast, “I come from land so vast,
With richest gold from coast to coast, a life some say is fast.
From my high perch I see quite far, to Rose toward the west,
And Patrick under eastern star I see is surely blessed.
Your daughter is quite welcome here, your son with her to stay.
Not much we lack but values dear, those once the only way.”Then lightning flashed, grey skies grew worse, a voice by all was heard,
“I am the Stars, the Universe, I made thee by my Word.
So live now where you best can stay, twixt Patrick, Eagle, Rose,
But love together all the way, and join not with my foes.
Do play, do kiss, do mate, do feel, and love impulsively.
Remember though your home that’s real, for all eternity.”
