ADVANCED LEGAL WRITING

Fall Semester 2006
Section I
Professor Franks

This syllabus lists the material to be read and briefed in advance of each class.  The required textbook is Ray & Cox, Beyond the Basics:  A Text for Advanced Legal Writing, 2d ed. (West Publishing Co., 2003).  The first edition, published 1991, is acceptable.  Students are also required to read W. Strunk and E. White, Elements of Style (New York: Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., 1979).

Additionally, students will master the material pertinent to this course available on the ExStellis web site or on reserve in the SULC library, including excerpts from the Associated Press Stylebook on capitalization, on titles, and on essential clauses (restrictive clauses) and non-essential clauses (non-restrictive clauses).  Students are further responsible for the "Guide to Punctuation" that appears as an appendix to the Associated Press Stylebook.

Class sessions will be in a lecture-discussion format, with students called upon to discuss assigned material.  Various writing assignments will be given from time to time, which will be graded. No final examination will be given.

Your attention is called to page 65 of the current catalog. "Attendance of 80 percent of the scheduled classes is a prerequisite for credit in a course."  Roll will be taken.  This policy will be enforced.  There are 13 scheduled classes this semester.  More than two absences will be disqualifying.  Students are expected to prepare their assignments.  Students are expected to attend class whether prepared or not.  Attendance is a factor in your academic success.  Your professor's home telephone is available from the Castle Communication Centre on the ExStellis web site. Your professor's office hours this semester are also posted on the web site.
