Dear Editor:

Thank goodness all aviation research and progress didn't stop the day Amelia Earhart went missing.  Aviation had its naysayers then, too.

The exploration of space must continue - and with better funding.  America must go to Mars.  A national priority to land a man on Mars will (a) galvanize the American spirit, (b) benefit the economy, (c) benefit humanity with spinoffs and (d) motivate children to study science.

We Americans and our economy would not have computers or e-mail were it not for the space program of the 1960s.  We would not even have pocket calculators!

A nation cannot continue to be a leader without staying on the leading edge in research and exploration.  Our universities now give out more degrees in physical education than in physics.  We're in big trouble.

It's time to go full speed ahead to Mars.  Let's make this our national priority now.
